How to Achieve Work-Life Balance

Work-life balance isn’t a myth. It’s often misunderstood, because there’s no perfect formula for work-life balance. One week, you may need to put in 60 hours to get a project completed. The next week, you may only work 30 hours because you don’t have enough projects. Work-life balance isn’t a specific number of hours of work and another number of hours of off-work. It’s more about achieving a sense of life outside of work while still being productive and creative at work.

Set Boundaries and Say No to Things that Waste Your Time

It can be difficult to say no to answering an email at 10:00 at night when it only takes a few seconds. But remembering to keep work during work hours can really help you enjoy your down time. Say no to the drinks with the gang when you have to be on your game. Limit your time with less constructive activities.

Unplug

We are so attached to our devices these days that we often forget to focus on other people or even ourselves. Make time every day to free yourself from your cords. Enjoy your kid’s t-ball games. Be present at dinner. Unplugging can make you feel like you have more control over your time.

Exercise

Your doctor has told you to exercise. You know that moving your body is good for you, both mentally and physically. Just do it as part of your work-life balance.

Start Small

If you make lists of new year’s resolutions but don’t follow through, you aren’t alone. When we try to make sweeping changes in our lives, it’s hard to make things stick. Changing habits isn’t easy. Start out making small changes and experience success. You can always build on that. If you start out big and don’t follow through, it can have a negative effect.
